ARE PROTEAS AND BANKSIAS THE SAME?
No, Banksias and Proteas are not the same. Banksias are a genus of around 170 species in the family Proteaceae, native to Australia. On the other hand, Proteas are a genus of South African flowering plants in the family Proteaceae. While they are both in the same family, they are different genus and are found in other parts of the world.
MEANING OF BANKSIAS
The meaning of "Banksia" is not entirely clear. Still, it is believed to be named after Sir Joseph Banks, an 18th-century naturalist who accompanied Captain James Cook on his voyage to Australia. Banks was the first person to collect and describe Banksia specimens, named in his honor by Carl Linnaeus the Younger, a botanist who later classified the plants. So Banksias are named after Sir Joseph Banks, a botanist, and a naturalist.
MEANING OF PROTEAS
The word "protea" comes from the Greek god Proteus, who was able to change his shape at will.
